News & Quotes
Nov 22ns 2017: Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu has joined Kilmarnock on a deal until the end of the season.
The 30-year-old, who worked with Killie manager Steve Clarke at the English Premier League club, left Norwich City in the summer, and was given a two-week trial at Rugby Park. Mulumbu has also played for Paris St-Germain and Amiens in France. "I didn't come to Kilmarnock just like that," Mulumbu, who has 36 Democratic Republic of Congo caps, said. "I spoke with Steve Clarke and he told me everything about the club and that was a big impact that he came here. I worked with him for a year and I know he's an honest manager. I know the way he trains and the way he wants to play, so it suits me and was a big affect for me coming here. I'm looking forward to showing the real Mulumbu. I was with Norwich for two years and it didn't work like I wanted, so I have something to prove."
Dec 26th 2017: “When you know your talent and have confidence, you can play anywhere. I’m someone who likes to play football, I am enjoying playing for Kilmarnock. If everything is okay, I might pick up a bigger team or I may go back in the Premier League. You never know. Right now, I am enjoying my time here and I hope we are going to finish in the first part of the table. I signed a deal until the end of the season. It is a challenge for me. I had some injuries and people doubted me. Is he able to play? Is he able to run? You got your answer on the pitch against Rangers. I was running for 90 minutes to do my best to win the game. I’m not 100 per cent yet. Before Kilmarnock, my last game was in February for Congo. I’m just catching up. I hope not to get any injuries and then be fully fit after the break. It means my performances have to get better. I’m trying to work hard in training and keep learning every day. I did two years at Norwich which didn’t go the way I wanted. Now I am enjoying winning the ball, running and winning matches. I’m not going to lie to you. When you play for West Brom week in, week out, you are one of the main players".
Feb 3rd on the Celtic Post-Match: “It was a crazy week for me because on Monday I received an offer from France (Bordeaux). I spoke with the manager and the board and it was a great offer from a big team in Ligue 1. It was one of the top four clubs in France and I was sad to leave Kilmarnock after such a short space of time. But there are some opportunities you can’t turn down. It all happened very fast but then on Wednesday they decided to stop the negotiations. I waited for the move until the last minute then Steve Clarke and the board decided to cancel everything because it was taking too long. I am happy to stay here and help the lads. Against Celtic, I scored a goal and I am 100 per cent focused on Kilmarnock now. It’s been four years without scoring so I’m happy. We knew it would be tough against the best team and you need to be ready. The manager didn’t really need to speak as all the players were focused and motivated. We waited, we suffered a bit in the first half but we didn’t concede many chances. In the second half we had chances and could have scored more goals. We deserved our win. When you play against the best team and you have Scott Brown, Olivier Ntcham and Eboue Kouassi against you, it’s going to be tough. But I like to be in those battles, I like to show people ‘This is who Youssouf Mulumba is. Sometimes he works sometimes he doesn’t but he did good against Celtic. I said we have the possibility to reach the top six and that remains the focus. We can’t beat Rangers and Celtic then finish in the bottom half — that would be unacceptable. We have some great players like Jordan Jones, we have brought in Aaron Tshibola, we have good forwards and they they are working hard. We are here to help young players like Greg Taylor. At the start of the season we were lacking confidence and when you don’t win games it’s hard to play. Now we just need to keep doing good things and keep the momentum.”
Feb 18th on the Well Away Win: “You need to dream and when you have the quality that this group has, you can beat any team. We’ve shown that — we beat Celtic, we beat Rangers, we drew away from home against them both. We’re not afraid of anyone, we just have to keep competing. I want to congratulate everybody. We were missing Gary Dicker and Alan Power but people replaced them very well on Saturday. The defensive team was very good because we knew it was going to be a battle but everybody put in a great shift. We showed real resilience. The game was like a cup final but we want to try and catch Hearts so it’s on to another tough game at home against Hibernian.
Look at the results before and after he (Steve Clarke) came, he knows what he wants. I’m not going to give all his secrets away but the defence is really tight. They don’t leave any space. It all comes from the training ground. Tactically he’s very good, he’s worked with the best and if we keep doing what he wants we’re going to be safe soon. I wasn’t surprised when he was spoken about regarding the Scotland job and I wasn’t surprised that he stayed with us. I think he’s a coach who wants to be in charge week in, week out. I don’t see him as a national coach. He’s someone who likes to teach every day. He’s doing well with Kilmarnock and who knows where he’s going to go. When I was in England, I only really looked at Aberdeen because my mate James Maddison was playing for them. Since being here, I’ve seen some good players, including Craig Tanner for Motherwell on Saturday. There’s good quality here and I hope the league will progress and more players from Scotland will go to England. Obviously you know players from Rangers and Celtic because they’re famous clubs. Aberdeen and Hibs also have some very good players. But I am more surprised by the other teams — the way Partick Thistle and Dundee want to play, for example. This league is underestimated by people.
Mulumbu came close to a transfer window move to Bordeaux (last month) : “I had mixed emotions. Obviously, it was a big team in France but I’ve been doing well since I came here and didn’t want to let my team down. When the deal failed, I wasn’t too down. Maybe something better will come. I don’t know what will happen at the end of the season — the main thing is to make this team progress. You can see the confidence among the players from what the coach has put in the team. We just keep going and I think we can surprise people. When teams come and play at Rugby Park, it will be with a bit of fear because we keep winning. It’s easier to be motivated against a big team like Rangers or Celtic. But my performance on Saturday showed I just want to play, to enjoy it and show who I am.
“I’m enjoying every game and training session. Last season was hard because I didn’t really play. Now, every day I know I’m going to have a good session with the lads and the coach. It’s easier to play football like that.”
May 14th 2018 on his Time Being Up at Killie: “Last Sunday emotional because I don’t know what is going happen next season. I’ve really enjoyed my time at Kilmarnock. I now have time speak with the gaffer the board to see what’s going to happen next. I haven’t ruled out staying. I haven’t decided yet. I will go on holiday for a week and after that I’ll meet Steve Clarke, we’ll have a chat and see what’s happening for me in the future. I’m not young.
Time is running fast. At 31 years old, I’ll see what the best option is for me. If I’ve an opportunity better than Kilmarnock, I will maybe take it. I just want to enjoy my football. This is why I’m not saying I’m leaving for sure. The financial side is not really important. I want a project where I will enjoy playing football and will be competitive like we have been. This is what I’m going to look for in the future. It can be with Kilmarnock or another team.
I’ll be sad to leave. Football is about emotion and the emotion I had was incredible. I won’t be surprised if the manager leaves but it’ll be his decision. Steve’s a top manager ....one of the best I’ve worked for.”
Youssouf Mulumbu: Celtic midfielder returns to Kilmarnock on loan
Jan 31st 2019: Celtic midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu has returned to Kilmarnock on loan for the remainder of the season.
Mulumbu, 32, helped Steve Clarke's side to a fifth-place Scottish Premiership finish last term before leaving in the summer and joining Celtic.
However, the former Paris St-Germain, West Brom and Norwich player has made only three appearances for Brendan Rodgers' Scottish champions.
June 1st 2019: Youssouf's loan to Killie expired and he returned to his parent club Celtic, and then was subsequently "freed".
August 28th 2020: Youssouf has re-signed with Killie (for a third time!) on a short term 5 month deal. He had been an unattached free agent prior.
Jan 11th 2021: Youssouf extends his stay thru May 2021.
May 21st 2021: "Mulumbu messaged the club on Monday and said he had to go back to France. The club would have liked him to have stayed for the play-off games, but he chose otherwise. Mulumbu's final start came in a 3-3 draw at home to St Mirren in April and he was a late substitute in the final-day 2-0.
May 23rd 2021 Tommy Wright on Mulumbu's Departure: “I’m not stunned that he has left. Having worked with him, the type of player he is, nothing stuns me about him. The first we knew was when the kit man informed me that his kit had all gone last Sunday after the Hamilton game. That seemed weird, strange. I then got a text message in the early hours of Monday morning saying that he had to go to France and he needed to speak to us. We said for him to come in, we’d have a meeting and discuss it. I don’t know where he is. He could be in France, he could anywhere. But listen, since I’ve been here he’s done nowhere near enough to be in the team, so it’s not something I’ve lost any sleep over. Some of the players are happy actually. As soon as it happened, I forgot about it. Putting a few blue and white hearts on your twitter account and saying you love the club, that’s all for show. I’ve had to deal with a lot since I came to the club. I’m not concerned that he’s left. It says more about him than it does about us.”
