Managers Comments - October 2016

Oct 29th on the Rangers Post-Match:  "It was disappointing and quite similar to Celtic in that we've been very passive in the game.  We thought we had an opportunity with the confidence levels of the players after their performance on Wednesday. We wanted to keep the game tight as long as we could so the fans would become a little bit nervous. But we allowed Rangers to gain momentum. The crowd got behind them and that made it a very difficult afternoon for us. Did it become an overwhelming occasion? It looks that way. That is one of the solutions I need to find when we come back to this type of arena and places like Celtic. I don't know why because their fans at home have nothing to do with us - we've got to play our game. We've got to use that to our advantage. I need to find a solution to try and take on these teams with the type of personnel I have on the pitch so we do not leave ourselves too open in the game." - Match Report -

Oct 26th 2016 on the Hearts Post-Match: "I'm delighted with the 3 points. We were excellent tonight, and we pressed them all over the park  in particular we vere even better without the ball. As for Souilly, he is going to have his own highlight reel for goal of the season. I thought both our goals were excellent, and Stevie Smith's left foot shot was a screamer! I had started him tonight to give us a bit more experience, in light of the quality of the opposition that we were facing. We are looking forward to Saturday now, and we will ask the players to go toe to toe with the Rangers players. It was also great to see Rory getting back to some decent form, and he has been fantastic for us, these last few weeks." - Match Report -

Oct 22nd 2016 on the Caley Post-Match: "It's frustrating to lose the goal near the end after being in control of the game for large periods and being dominant,  We started really well and deservedly took the lead and looked impressive going forward and making chances. We've hit the woodwork twice and had other numerous chances. We were in control of the game really and they weren't hurting us. But we knew they had a threat and would throw the proverbial kitchen sink at us at the end and we're disappointed that we could have done better from the long throw." - Match Report -

Oct 21st 2016 on the Caley Pre-Match : “When you go away from home to one of the most consistent teams in the league, get the result and keep the elusive clean sheet it is pleasing.  The important thing for us now is to go and re-produce that again and get another win because I don’t know how long it has been since the club last got back to back wins.  When we go away from home we have to make it difficult for our opponents – it’s not our job to go out and entertain the home fans. We have to make sure we’re defending and throwing our bodies on the line. We had some good opportunities we didn’t capitalise on. We’ve got things to look at this week and obviously being away from home again we’ll be under pressure. But we’ve got to make sure we are good on the counter attack. We have to be more clinical when we do break.  We knew coming off the back of those two heavy defeats that something had to change, we had to at least take a point at St Johnstone. We have to use our work ethic from Saturday, the stats I’ve got from after the game show the players had their top fitness performance of the season.  Hopefully as the confidence grows we can improve on our work with the ball.”  David Wren - Daily Record

Oct 15th on the Saints Post-Match: "It's been a long two weeks since the Aberdeen game. There's been a lot of soul-searching and debriefing of that defeat. We had a chat about where I felt we had gone wrong in the previous two games to where I felt we'd been before Celtic.

"By the end we were still disappointed with our output in those two games but there was a realism about what we are up against in Aberdeen and Celtic, two outstanding sides, two clubs poles apart with us. We got the positivity back and people were starting to look about and feel there was a decent side there. We've shown that today against a very good side. It's our first clean sheet as well and we've got that bit of magic from a set-piece to give us the win.

"Jamie was outstanding again, as he was in every game. It was good to get Miles Addison back for his first start in a month too. I just told him it was no coincidence that we get that clean sheet today." - Match Report -

Oct 12th 2016 on Greg Kiltie and Dean Hawkshaw: “Greg’s injury is a huge blow because he’s one of the best young players in the country. He’s been terrific since I’ve come to the club. It’s a big blow also on top of the news about Dean a couple of weeks earlier.  We lost two players who have been doing very, very well for us. They have been influential even though they are young. That’s testing for us. We have to find a way of replacing them, either from our squad or, at this stage in the season, players who do not have a club. We brought a lot of players in [over] the summer but I’ve got to be on the lookout still because we’ve lost two lads who were a mainstay of our stand-out performance of the season against Rangers. They offer energy, awareness and the ability to make a goal for their team-mates, or to score themselves.  When you lose those kind of players you have to look to see if there is anything else out there or if there is anyone already at the club. We’ve got young Jack Paterson but he’s only 16. He’s a terrific young player and he’s been on the bench against Aberdeen, but we have to decide when it is the right time to put him in. If we feel it’s not right we may look to sign someone, but I’ve got to balance things out.  When you delve in that market who is to say those players will be ready? It can take six or seven weeks to get them fit. You can imagine it would be very difficult for them to make an impact in the next two or three games.”  - Neil Faskin - The National -

Oct 1st on the Dons Post-Match: "What's the point in having a go? I will only lose a few quid. It was a strange one, that's all I'll say. I've seen the footage back as well. A strange decision to say the least. First goals are always important. Whether it's changed the game, in the fashion that it ended up, I don't particularly believe so. Second half we never performed at all. I take full responsibility for that. It's been men against boys in the last two games, I thought we could bounce back from the Celtic game and I thought we could give a more spirited performance. I thought we did first half, I thought we went toe-to-toe with Aberdeen. I know they started brightly but we have created chances ourselves. But it became too easy in the end for Aberdeen. We are very, very disappointed." - Match Report -
