Quotes

Dec 28th 2013: “There are lots of young players getting an opportunity the way football in Scotland is going. But a lot of folk are taking their chance, that’s the good thing. Once you get in the team you need to do all you can to stay there. Now people are talking about some players at Dundee United going on to big moves. Even the Hearts side that is struggling is full of youngsters who, going forward, are a real threat. Callum Paterson, Jamie Walker, they’re good players. And there seems to be good young players in most teams. All over Scotland youngsters are creating headlines. I do feel established although it’s all about trying to get a run of games now, working hard for the team, creating chances and chipping in with goals. It’s good to get on the scoresheet again but the most important thing is the win. We knew we would get a result like that soon if we kept working hard. It was great to see it finally pay off and for Rory to get a goal. Sometimes we have struggled to kill teams off but, as you saw against Hearts, we’re getting to grips with that. We got two up and scored more, kept creating chances. With Kris Boyd in the team goals should never be a problem. It’s great seeing the table now because we’re looking up instead of down. Our aim is to catch the teams in front of us. That means going to Hibs and winning. It’s great to be up there alongside Kris. Everyone knows how good he is, a guy of his quality, the goals he scores...it’s scary. You know if you put the ball in the box there’s a good chance he’ll score. He bagged two against Hearts and could have had five. I played for the Under-19s then got called up to the 21s last month. That was quite a boost, great to get a chance. It was also fantastic to go and train with the national team last month, working under Gordon Strachan. It was totally unexpected but a wonderful experience that will help me a lot.”

January 4th 2014: The St Mirren match was just about getting the three points. We were not sure which way the match was going to go towards the end as both sides were having a go. But then we got the goal to win the game and it felt great, especially after losing to Hibs the match before. We had done so well against Hearts at Tynecastle but let ourselves down at Easter Road. So to get the winner late on was special. Boydie has come up with the winner and that is what he is all about. He has scored goals throughout his career and he won't stop. We're aiming for the top six and he is the type of player who could make the difference in us achieving that. If he keeps scoring the goals then we have a great chance. But then it is up to us to keep creating the chances so he can take them. We know if we put the right ball into the right area he will score goals. The top six is something we can definitely aim for. We're on a decent run right now and if we can keep that up we then we can start looking up the way rather than down."

May 4th 2013: “I’m keeping it [hair], don’t worry about it. The boys can say what they want but they’re not getting near it. I’m just the wee boy with long hair – even if no-one knows my name they know who I am on the park. Maybe it’s because I’m different. They take one look at me, and think ‘long hair – get the clippers out’ but it’s not going to happen. If James Dayton can keep his beard I can keep my hair! I’ll be keeping my hat on for the last day of the season and getting out as quick as I can. Matt’s [Kennedy] doing great down there and pushing for the first team. We grew up in the same year at Glenburn Primary then Prestwick Academy. We’d play against each other in the playground trying to get the better of each other. We’re still close friends. We always catch up when he’s back up the road. I understand the lure of going down there but getting one or two seasons in the first team here is what I’m looking for. That’s the way guys like James McCarthy and James McArthur went, getting a lot of games and experience under their belts at Hamilton. Now they’re both playing week in week out in the Premier League down south.”

May 19th 2013: “The type of player I am, I know there’s going to be a lot of fouls on me. But it doesn’t bother me and I just get on with it and keep plugging away. All wingers get it and it’s part of the game. I like being positive and getting at opponents – it’s the type of player I am and fans enjoy that. If players are kicking you then you know they’re getting angry because you’re getting the better of them and that just means I’ll run at them even more."

October 17th 2014: "It [bonus row] won't have an impact on what we do on the park. Things have been going on behind closed doors for a wee while but we have still been going out and getting results. It's not been affecting us in terms of results. We are just concentrating on winning games and moving up the table because that is all we can do."

January 23rd 2015: "I would say that the Thistle game and the Dundee United game, that's when we were on our wee good run of form. If we get back to that and chip in with goals then we can win the game. We are not conceding but we are not scoring as much as we should be. I think we know we need to play better as a team. But we are not worrying. We know it is still early in the season and we can still get into the top six. If we win tomorrow, everyone will be happy again. Like all the teams around us, we need a break and maybe we will get one tomorrow."

February 17th 2015: “The new manager told me to go out and express myself and don’t be afraid to make mistakes which is obviously great. That makes a massive difference. Instead of playing the ball back and being safe I’m told to take risks. The manager has given us all a wee boost by telling us to believe in ourselves. He wants the wingers to make things happen And he has said he’d rather I got to the byeline six times and put in six bad balls than just going back the way and playing it safe. [On his goal] I was thinking, ‘Did that actually go into the net?’ I was surprised but I’ll take it. It was great to win right at the death. Hopefully, we can keep going and get more wins. To come from behind twice against Dundee United is great. We know they have lost some players but they are still a great team and to lose goals and not let our heads go down paid off. The crowd were behind us and it makes such a difference. It can be hard when you are struggling but the fans have been great this season. Our home form has to be big to challenge for the top six. We’re looking to challenge St Johnstone now and, if we string a few results together, we can get up the table.”

August 13th 2015: "It's [cruciate injury] going to be a hard time for however long it is - six months maybe. Hopefully I can get back playing this season. I know I'll come back stronger and better. That's the most important thing. This is the kind of game you want to play in - against the best team in the country. Yesterday, I was trying to get back from my ankle injury and then I've done this. It is a horrible one to get at any time, but I just need to stay positive, do all the exercises, hopefully the operation goes well and get back as soon as I can. If I beat myself up, it's just going to get worse. It's happened, I just need to get on with it and stay positive. It happens, it's football, it's the nature of the game. You've just got to get on with these things. It will make me stronger. It's happened when I'm young. It could have been worse. It could have happened when I'm near the end of my career and been unable to come back from it."

December 24th 2015: Chris talks to KillieFC TV's Davie Sneddon Jnr about his current injury status...

April 8th 2016: “The last eight months have been the hardest time I’ve had and it really affected me. I was missing my football and the team wasn’t doing great, so it was hard to watch.  A lot of things go through your head at times like that, really negative thoughts. It’s frustrating because the team isn’t doing great and you want to be out helping the boys but can’t do anything about it. I’m confident that if I was out there playing I’d be creating chances for the likes of Josh Magennis, so it was hard to watch helplessly from the stand. I’ve never had injuries before – this was my first serious one. I spoke to people at the start who warned me it was going to be very hard and they were right. It’s always in your head that you might not be the same after the injury but you can’t let that hold you back.  There are going to be days when it’s still sore. If I start thinking about it then it’s going to affect my performance. But if I can get back in the team before the end of this season and help Killie stay up that would make all the hard work and  rehab worthwhile. I’ve been playing a few reserve games and building up from 30 to 45 minutes. I’m feeling good so I’m just waiting for the gaffer and physios to judge when I’m ready.  They haven’t wanted to rush me back into it but I’ve been in full training for a while and the knee has come through a few good challenges. I needed that. So if I can get back in and play a few games, that would make up for all the hard work I’ve done with the physios and in the gym. We are confident we’ll stay up. The changing room has been positive because we know the quality we have in there. If we win our next seven games we are safe. Simple as that. Look at Motherwell. They’ve won their last five when five weeks ago their main goal was just staying up – now they could be going for Europe. So that shows how quickly things can turn around if you can put together a run of games. Even more so after the league splits because you are playing the teams around you at that stage.”
