Match Report

Sandy Armour @ Global Energy Stadium

The last time we travelled to Dingwall (and lost) was a stormy Tuesday night just after Christmas so it was pleasant to look forward to making the long trek in the middle of summer. A lot of preparation and planning goes into these journeys so you can imagine the horror when we had lost the plug in power cable for our juke box! After picking up a couple of my old mates in Glasgow we embarked on a tour of Bishopbriggs and Auchinairn to find a Halfords that could remedy our "lack of sounds" issue.

The detour likely cost us about an hour as we haven't fully embraced the wonderful world of SatNav but eventually Tivvy persuaded the manager to give us £20 off the adapter and we headed back up north. The journey up the A9 is the most scenic jaunt of the season and we were blessed with great weather as the minibus weaved its way through the bonny purple heather (as Billy Connolly would say).

We often stop off in Carrbridge for a few refreshments but due to our earlier tour of Glasgow we just went straight to Dingwall and to the well known watering hole 'The Mallard'. It was great to see many well known Killie faces and there was a general feeling of optimism after last week's win at Hamilton. Nobody could be sure what the starting line up would be as Clark had brought in three more new faces 24 hours earlier and the rumour was they could be seeing some action. The other topics of conversation included Wolves wanting Kiltie and talk of a boardroom meeting on Friday with a follow up meeting on Sunday......oh to be a fly on the wall.

My biggest fear was that I wouldn't be able to recognise the new guys in the team so I kept my mates close at hand to keep me right. We started with Hendrie making his debut at right back whilst Adams started in midfield to replace Dicker who dropped to the bench. The manager had hinted he would start with two up front and that was how we went with Boyd and Coulibaly leading the charge. We started fairly well and were controlling most of the game however the strikers were feeding on scraps as we failed to create any clear cut chances. McDonald was largely untroubled at the other end however and it looked like we could take something from the game.

The game changed just shy of the half hour mark as Boyce gave the hosts the lead after soft defending and Addison left the field with an injury to be replaced by Burn. County took confidence from the goal and were now pressing more whilst Jones looked like the one player that might just provide a spark for Killie. We reached half time hoping for an improvement after the break and hopefully giving their keeper a bit more of a test.

Sadly the second half was worse than the first as County carried a threat whilst we seemed to launch aimless balls at Boyd. The second goal came again from Boyce in 74 minutes and the game was effectively over. Fox in the County goals could have brought along his Kindle for the day, the warm up would have been the hardest part of his afternoon! The final whistle was met with some boos from the Killie fans who expected a bit more after such a long journey.

Overall it was a hugely disappointing day and I still feel we are missing an experienced head in the middle of the park. We have brought in loads of new players but we quickly need to find the right blend and formation before we are once again embroiled in a battle at the wrong end of the table. There is a long time to go so no need for panic yet however the fans have had too many nerve jangling scraps in recent years and we don't want another one. Next up is Rangers at home on Friday night, that would be a good game to kick start our season!

Comments

Lee Clark: "The two goals we lost were, without a shadow of a doubt, preventable. They were disappointing goals, to say the least.  The first came from a good bit of play from us, actually. Jordan Jones got to the by-line and they cleared the cross, breaking from the edge of their box. We've been disappointed with how we've defended. The second was very preventable as well, getting caught off the long kick from the keeper. Football is about learning, about looking at your own performance and judging that and deciding which way you want to go. We have a long journey back now, but we have to make good decisions going forward. I thought we started the game brightly, we were more than a match for Ross County. We got down the outsides quite well. Young Dean Hawkshaw came on and did well. He was impressive - I really like him. We missed him last week after a head injury in the first game. It is difficult to assess fully without seeing the footage back after you've lost a game but you learn from the wins and you learn from the losses. That's what we've got to do tonight."
