Manager Kilmarnock FC, Dec 2019 - Jan 2021
Alex's Reign at Killie Recap: Dyer first arrived in Scotland in October 2017 when he answered the call from Steve Clarke to be his assistant manager. Together they led Kilmarnock to fifth in the Scottish Premiership, then followed it up the following season with third - their highest league finish since 1966 and a return to Europe for the first time since 2001.
When Clarke left to become the manager of Scotland, Dyer combined roles as assistant to Clarke and to new Killie boss Alessio. But after the Italian was sacked, Dyer was first made caretaker for three games, then given the job until the end of the season, before signing a two-year contract in June.
However, he won just 13 of his 43 games in charge - the worst points per game record of any Killie manager since promotion to the top flight in 1993.
June 15th 2020: Alex Dyer signed a two-year contract having been in interim charge following Angelo Alessio’s departure in December 2019.
Alex said: “I’m extremely proud to continue as manager of this wonderful football club and I thank the Board of Directors for the faith they’ve shown me. My passion and desire to lead this club and team has been strengthened during these recent months away from football and I’m looking forward to start working with the team again as we prepare for the season ahead. I’ve always enjoyed a close bond with the fans and I’ve been blown away by how they’ve continued to show their support during the shutdown. This season, starting out without supporters in the stadium, will be unlike any other that I’ve ever known but that continued sense of unity can help carry us through until we’re able to reunite at Rugby Park.”
Billy Bowie: “Alex stepped up to provide stability at a crucial time last season and as we prepare for a new campaign, we believe that continuity combined with his understanding of the club will be critical as we face the challenges ahead. Working closely with our Head of Football Operations, Alex is passionate about creating opportunities for our young players to progress to the first team and he has already started to shape the squad by securing contract extensions for key players. As a Board, we will support him as much as we possibly can when the transfer window opens. This will be a season like no other and the unity and support that we’ve seen from everyone in the Killie family will be equally important throughout this campaign.”
December 30th 2019: Alex Dyer says "it is a privilege" to be named Kilmarnock manager until the end of the season after replacing Angelo Alessio.
Alessio was sacked earlier this month, having overseen just 22 matches.
Dyer, 54, was Steve Clarke's assistant as the Scotland boss led Kilmarnock to successive record Scottish Premiership points hauls in 2018 and 2019.
They finished fifth and third, respectively, and Dyer has continued to work with Clarke as part of the Scotland set-up.
The former Blackpool defender has coached under Avram Grant, Sam Allardyce, Eddie Gray and Steve Coppell but his only previous experience as a manager came during a five-game stint at English non-league outfit Welling United in 2017.
Who is new Kilmarnock boss Dyer?
Dyer keen to be next Kilmarnock manager
Alex Said On His Appointment: "I care deeply about this fantastic football club. I believe we have a good group of players at the club and with a few additions during the transfer window then I'm convinced we can rejuvenate our season and re-establish the identity the club has built over the past few years."
Billy Bowie added: "Alex is hugely respected by everyone at the club and we believe he is capable of ensuring the club moves forward in the right direction again. I'm sure our fans will join us in giving their full support to Alex for the remainder of the season."
Jan 30th 2021: Kilmarnock Football Club can confirmed the departure of Manager Alex Dyer by mutual consent following the 3-2 defeat to St Johnstone.
Club Statement Read: "We are grateful to Alex for all he has achieved with the club since joining Killie in October 2017. However, recent results and performances have been disappointing and with 24 points from 25 Premiership matches, we believe this is the right time for a change.
Alex was part of the management team which secured back-to-back club record points totals in 2017/18 and 2018/19 and a return to European football at Rugby Park.
Billy Bowie said: “This was a tough decision for the club and not one which was made lightly. However in light of recent results and in the interest of preserving our Scottish Premiership status, we feel this is the correct time for a change.
“Alex is a great man who I have the utmost respect for and he will always be warmly welcomed back to Rugby Park.
“I want to thank Alex for his important contribution to some truly wonderful days here at Kilmarnock and I wish him every success in the future.”
After the 2-3 home loss to St Johnstone Killie had just three wins in 11 games. It left Dyer with the worst points-per-game record of any Killie manager since their return to the top flight, and it was enough for the club to call time on his reign.
June 11th 2021: Alex become Assistant Manager at Colchester.
June 27th 2021: Kirk Broadfoot reckons Alex Dyer should have been given more time: ....“I couldn’t believe it. I genuinely thought we had a good enough squad to stay in the league. I still believe that we did, but for one reason or another it didn’t happen and it hurt. I don’t know if we got as big a lift from the new manager coming in. Maybe we were so close to Alex that we were all hurting from him losing his job. I think social media had a part to play in him losing his job. Do I think we should have stuck with Alex? In my opinion I don’t think we would have got relegated with Alex Dyer as the manager.”
