Match Report

Sandy Armour @ Palmerston

When it was announced that we were playing a pre-season friendly at Palmerston a cold shiver ran down my spine. I associate Palmerston with an infamous day in Killie history in 1989 when we were relegated to the bottom division despite the heroic efforts of the good lord Willie Watters and his mates. There was little chance that this game was going to stay so long in the memory however it was a good chance for Killie fans to get a look at our numerous new signings.

The sun was splitting the sky as the bus pulled away from the Howard but we didn’t get too far as the Queens Drive was at a standstill. A quick U-turn by the bullet (driver) and we were quickly shooting down the A76 to see how the new squad was shaping up. You are never too old to learn and even though I have been to Dumfries on several occasions I never knew they had a wee bar under the main stand……nice pint it was as well. I even got talking to an old neighbour who now works in Hong Kong but is back for a couple of weeks and he needed his “Killie fix”.

I’ll start with my only negative of the night, there was no fish and chip van inside the ground!! To clarify, our trip to Berwick on Saturday was illuminated by a big cholesterol wagon behind the goals which was well used by the travelling crowd. The Doonhamers were less well prepared and they actually ran out of food before half time and more importantly before I had the chance to grab some grub.

Onto the game and a thoroughly entertaining 90 minutes finished in a draw, probably a fair result but we maybe should have edged it. McDonald started the game once again and if rumours are to be believed Samson may not be a Killie player by the time we welcome Dundee on the opening day. I don’t think the starting line up was the one that will take the field on August 1st but it was a strong team nonetheless. Queens were slightly better than us in the first half and they got their noses in front after 17 minutes when Hilson broke the offside trap before cutting inside and firing home from about 8 yards. Both teams had chances before the break with Magennis having a couple of chances where he should have done better. Obadeyi limped off with an ankle injury and was replaced by the lively McKenzie whilst Splaine went off and was replaced by Carrick. Higginbotham was causing problems for the hosts with his direct running and ability to go past a player but we couldn’t find the killer touch in the box.

Unlike on Saturday there were no half time changes but Killie stepped up after the break and player some decent stuff. Higginbotham had a fantastic 30 yard effort tipped over the bar whilst Queens hit the base of the post after a 20 yard strike from Conroy. Killie drew level on 55 minutes when McKenzie curled a beauty into the corner from just inside the box. Killie were now on top and they freshened things up by introducing eight subs namely O’Hara, Boyd, Kiltie, Slater, Barbour, Hawkshaw, Ashcroft and Hodge who replaced……well the eight outfield players who started the game!

Killie remained on top and took the lead when that man McKenzie bagged his third goal in two games. Boyd dummied a pass from the right and McKenzie took it in his stride before slotting under the keeper. Sadly it didn’t last long as Queens equalised within  a minute. Conroy did the damage curling a 22 yard free kick over the wall and beyond the diving McDonald. McKenzie had a chance to grab a hat trick but miscued from about 10 yards. There were no other great chances and both sets of fans probably felt satisfied as the ref brought proceedings to a close.

We never read too much into these games as they are essentially about building match fitness and letting the boss see who will get a start in the first league game. Higginbotham and McKenzie caught the eye and should hopefully carry on the good form into the real stuff. We headed up the road but not before Kaz got a few pics with Magennis and Higginbotham. The game may not linger in the memory like 1989 but this was a good workout for Killie and I share the view of many fans that we are looking better than we were 12 months ago.
