Part 1 - Hibs (A)

It Is What It Is

In the 1st of an occasional series, Craig Benson is going to take us back in time twenty years to bring you the story of season 1996/97.

Prior to the start of the season, our transfer dealings saw Bobby Connor go to the wee team in the county and record-breaking goalkeeper Bobby Geddes leave for Raith Rovers.

Coming in during the summer of '96? The man for whom those of us of a certain age immediately think of any time a player returns to the pitch with a headful of bandages by noting that they've gone 'full McGowne'. Kevin McGowne signed on from St Johnstone. Oh, and Gary Tallon signed from Blackburn.

Without further ado we move to the first game. We traveled through to Edinburgh to take on Hibernian at Easter Road.

All the goals were scored in the first half, with Mitchell & Henry giving us a 2-0 lead after only 25 minutes. Hibs hit back through Weir a couple of minutes after Henry's goal. The play raged from end to end for the rest of the game, with a string of fine saves from Lekovic (right) keeping the good guys in the lead.

By the end of the game, and with the other full-time scores coming in from all over the country, Killie were top of the table at 5pm.

Team: Lekovic, Macpherson, Tallon, Reilly, Whitworth, Anderson, Mitchell, Henry, Wright, McIntyre, McKee.
Subs: Lauchlan (?) Montgomerie & Roberts for Whitworth, Henry & McKee.

Attendance: 8,734
