With games quickly running out & our top flight status not 100% assured, Killie lined up against one of our basement rivals Hibs at Rugby Park. A win for either side would have gone a long way to securing survival. But. By the time the clock ticked round to quarter to five, both sides had to settle for just a point.
Kilmarnock took the lead through Paul Wright's 17th goal of the season: Jim McIntyre chased a ball into the corner, and managed to dig out a cross. John Henry was on hand to flick it on for Wright, who steadied himself before lashing the ball past the advancing Jim Leighton. It was almost two shortly after, when Gary Holt had a well on target header blocked by the legs of Leighton. Patience, Gary. Patience...
Hibs would get a wholly undeserved equaliser just before half time. A corner, swung right into the six yard area saw Lavety head towards goal. In an attempt to make a clearance, all Monty managed to do was flick it into his own goal. Possibly still suffering the effects of the brain freeze from the ice cream that David Tanner had bought for him for his 'Extra Time' piece in Saltcoats the day before (ice cream... at Saltcoats beach... in April!? Hype, hippo, hippy... dashed cold so it would have been)
Comedy signing Robert Prytz was then carried on as a substitute for John Henry because of... umm... reasons. This served only to inspire the visitors, who, having the most of the closing exchanges, were ultimately kept at bay by Dragoje Lekovic.
With 9th placed Motherwell also drawing, it was a case of 'as you were' as we headed into May. But before then, we had the small matter of a Scottish Cup Semi Final replay to contend with.
Lekovic, MacPherson, Kerr, Monty, McGowne, Reilly, Bagan, Henry, Wright, McIntyre, Holt
Subs: Prytz & McKee for Henry & McIntyre
