The first game of 1997 saw us travel to third placed Dundee United and they were all over us like that person who had just a wee bit too much to drink at the bells. Sure, you quite like them, but you weren't expecting a tongue rammed down your throat and legs to wrapped round you before the fireworks had finished.
It would scar you for life. Kind of like the first few games of '97.
We got to half time level at 0-0, thanks in no small part to the home side messing up their lines and Mavis sending a free kick by airmail to Stavanger. We didn't get off so lightly in the second half. 943 year old Maurice Malpas scored with a diving header from a corner. Well, he claims it was a diving header. Looks more like a hip gave way and he fell into the ball. I'm implying he's old... even back then.
The home side wrapped up the points with that man Ray McKinnon, not via a free kick this time, but just a 25 yard dipping volley that flew into the net, leaving the children of Stavanger without a spare ball. The big meanie. Paul Wright almost got us back in it. He had his shot cleared off the line at point blank range by a defender.
Full time 2-0 to United but we remained eighth. Up next for us? THAT trip to Celtic Park...
