Girls Scrape Past Arsenal
FC Kilmarnock Girls 3 - 2 Arsenal North
(SWFL Match - 2nd March 2003, 2.00pm Kick Off)
Divisional Team got off to a slow start in what was their most crucial remaining league fixture, against Arsenal North Ladies. A great solo run by Lynsey Bain led to a scramble in the box where Lynsey McQuade slotted in the first goal of the game.
Despite being 1-0 up, the girls continued to struggling to keep possession and inevitably, Arsenal were gifted an equaliser when slack defending allowed the Gunners time to slot home from a corner. With half time nearing Arsenal doubled their tally despite the outstanding efforts of the Killie keeper, who had until this stage, almost single handedly kept them on level terms.
Manager Donna Wood had a few harsh words to say at the interval and a revitalised Killie went on to prove why they were favorites to win the league. With a little reorganisation, Killie settled and began to show their true ability. Throughout the half, Arsenal failed to record a shot on target thanks to the defensive-prowess of Lynsey Johnstone, Anne Campbell and Sam Daziel.
Killie built from the back and in time got the equaliser they deserved; Sam Daziel's well struck free kick giving the keeper no chance. Now on form, some one touch passes allowed Naomi Johnstone to fire away the 3rd and final goal. With tempers racing, Arsenal were reduced to 10 players and heads went down.
Having been a very hard game Killie were lucky to come out on top. The team have two more league games left, and hopefully with two more victories will be league champions. Good luck and keep it up girls.
